Something you love could be making you fat - and it’s not food. Fattening furniture...

Could your sofa or mattress be making you fat?

A new study by researchers at Duke and North Carolina State universities is suggesting just that. The potential problem is deep within the furniture, in the form of Firemaster 550. That’s a flame-retardant chemical that is added to polyurethane foam used in a lot of our favorite comfy sofas, chairs and mattresses. Lab rats who were forced to lounge around the cushy chemical wound up experiencing extreme weight gain and cardiovascular problems.

Unfortunately, you won’t find Firemaster 550 on the labels of furniture that has been treated with it. Items made with polyurethane foam most likely will contain it. If you’d like to avoid the chemical in the future, shop for furniture with polyester-fill padding instead.
