Makin' Bacon
If you like nice firm, crispy bacon, skip the pan. Put it in the oven. You know what a mess frying up that bacon on the stove top can be, this is a great method that's less messy, and cooks more strips at a time. Preheat the oven to about 350, put a layer of parchment paper paper down, lay out your bacon slices, and then put another layer of parchment on top. There's a trick to stop the bacon slices from shriveling up too, lay another cookie sheet on top of the bacon. Check it after about five minutes or so, to see if it's done, different cuts of bacon will vary in cooking time.

Road Trip
Long car trips aren't like they used to be. Our vehicles are much better equipped to entertain the kids, but even that DVD or video game gets old after a few hours. Consider renting some books on tape. There are a lot of great classics available that will keep the kids attention, and grown-ups can stand them too! Another great tool is a basic clipboard with plenty of blank paper. It's a better surface than a floppy coloring or notebook.
Even if you've got a GPS, keep a road map handy for the kids. Let them follow your route with a crayon or highlighter, then you can be the one asking "Are we there yet?"

8. Safety
9. Love
10. Discovery

Depreciating Device
If you love your electronic gadgets, chances are you take pretty good care of them. And if you'd like to save some money, skip the extended warranties and service contracts. Electronics on the market today are actually very reliable, and chances are, they won't break if you care for them. Those extended contracts are a waste of money because that device is depreciating in value fast, and will soon be out-teched by a smarter device. If something does go wrong, look at the bright side, you've got an excuse to replace that device with the latest and greatest gadget.

Brush Before Breakfast
Brushing our teeth is key to overall health. The condition of our gums can determine a lot, including the health of our hearts. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, and make it a full two minutes each time. That first brush should be BEFORE you eat breakfast to get rid of the overnight bacteria in there that food will interact with. Then, rinse after breakfast. The next most important time to brush is before bed.
Late night snacks, after you've brushed, are really bad for your teeth and gums. There's very little saliva while you sleep and you'll be more prone to gum inflammation or infection.

Boarding The Dog
If you're going away and plan on boarding your dog, there are a few questions you should ask the kennel before you check your best friend in:
Where will my dog stay? Ask to see the space. It's important that the environment in organized and odor-free.
How often will my dog be walked? Some facilities only let the dogs out twice a day for a few minutes. If you want a space for your dog to roam, be sure the kennel has one.
What will my dog eat? Boarding can be stressful enough, and a change in diet can add to that. It's a good idea to leave a supply of your dog's food at the kennel.
When choosing a boarding facility, ask your vet for a recommendation, but be sure to ask your friends too. You'll enjoy your trip a lot more if you know your dog is in good hands.

Desktop Debris
Your desk at work, and the area around it, say a lot about who you really are. Psychologist Sam Gosling, author of Snoop - What Your Stuff Says About You, reveals some of the deliberate, and not so deliberate messages that are sitting on our desks:
If it's super organized, you're old fashioned and well-grounded. If there are messy drawers inside that neatness, you're probably an intellectual.
If you're surrounded by plants, you're committed to your job. It shows you care about your surroundings and don't mind a bit of work and effort.
If your work space is stacked with stuff, it's not always a bad thing. That desk debris suggests you're creative and a good multi-tasker.
That worker with the desktop photo gallery is most likely friendly and prone to success. Someone who likes to be reminded of their full and happy life is usually confident and driven.
The person who's desk is filled with knickknacks, collectibles or stuffed animals is a sensitive listener, and a good person to ask for help or advice.

Can You Hear Me Now?
If you want to be heard, make sure you don't sound old. There's a big difference between generations when it comes to communication. Adolescents get their point across with the quick burst of a text, and toddlers and babies with even less than that. Here are a few key approaches to really being heard:
Think of conversations as newspaper headlines. Start with the most important information, and once you've got their attention, start supporting your statement.
Take a texting approach. When we text, or take notes, we get the important information out there without watering it down. Apply that to conversation, and your message will be heard.
Don't forget the body language. Smile, make eye contact, and lean forward. These are powerful tools that keep the listener engaged.

Hazardous Hose
It's a hot summer day, and you or your kids might be tempted to take a refreshing slurp from that garden hose. Not so fast! You could be getting a mouthful of lead! Consumer Reports explains that the PVC that most hoses are made from could contain a dangerous amount of lead. That goes for the brass fitting on the end too. Some hoses have warning labels on them that they are not to be used for drinking. Others may be labeled "drinking water safe". Even those should be flushed out first.
A lot of hoses aren't labeled at all, so you're better off skipping the sipping. It's also a good idea to wash your hands after handling the hose since the lead can be transferred from there to your mouth.

Good Grooming
We all have our good and bad days when it comes to our appearance. But have you ever noticed the days you look good might be better all around? Psychology professor Brian Meier conducted a study in which candid photos of men and women were shown to strangers. The better groomed subjects were perceived as more attractive, friendlier, and even smarter. It's the Halo Effect which subconsciously signals that beauty is good, a stereotype that we can't seem to escape.
A lot of us have that natural boost of self-esteem when we look our best, which makes us more approachable. So if you're having a good day, and the people around you seem more agreeable, it may be no coincidence.

Bossy Boss
If your boss is a jerk, dealing with that becomes part of your job description. But there are different strokes for different folks when it comes to management:
The Micromanager. This could be a control freak who is insecure, and you need to reassure them. Frequent progress reports can help. If you've made a mistake in the past, remind them it won't happen again.
The Undecider. This boss may be afraid to make a wrong decision. Get straight to the point with this type.Make recommendations and explain why it's the best choice.
The Machiavelli. If your boss is just trying to impress their boss, proceed with care. This type likes people that make them look good. Avoid challenging them and use the words "we" and "our" rather than "I" and "my".
The Compulsive Critic. If your boss is never satisfied, don't waste too much time defending yourself. A thick skin can be your best defense with this type.
The Moody Boss. This type of manager is usually more concerned about their own feelings than others'. The best approach is to keep a low profile. Avoid getting dragged into dramas or confrontation.

You're Invited
If you're planning a get together, electronic guest lists can make the invites easier, but they can also be annoying. It's important to use the method that best fits the occasion:
E-mail is best for get-togethers for one particular social group. Avoid using BCC or blind addresses, and don't forget to delete people who can't make it from any additional e-mails or replies.
Facebook is fine for less intimate events, and if you don't need a really accurate head count. A lot of people ignore those or hit "Maybe".
Group texts can work with a small group of close friends for something impromptu, but it's not a great option for casual acquaintances.
Digital cards are a good choice for cocktail parties or theme events. They can offer some fun extras and convenient options for your guests to respond.
Of course, if you're planning a really nice affair, stick with the classic hand written invitation, there's really no substitute for that personal touch.

Phobia Facts
Do you have a phobia? About 19 million American adults do. It's a powerful, irrational fear of a particular situation or thing. Phobia's usually develop in childhood, and many of them are treatable, but unfortunately most phobic people never seek help. Agoraphobia, or fear of not being able to escape from a car, plane or crowded area, affects about 1.8 million people. That's nothing compared to about 15 million who suffer from a number of social phobias, including the number one phobia, public speaking.
Some other phobias that top the list are extreme weather, flying, heights, blood, dogs and dentists. Spiders and snakes still make the top ten.

New Job Trend
A big portion of the jobs that are coming back just aren't like they used to be. A lot of employers are opting for more temporary and contract positions instead of traditional full-time jobs with benefits, and experts say that number of contingent workers could increase by 40% over the next ten years. Employers are trying to keep costs down, and right now, they've got the upper hand, according to economist Susan Houseman.
If you're having trouble finding a job, experts say it's a good idea to not rule out part-time or contract positions. In a lot of cases, already having a job can actually make you a more attractive candidate to other potential employers.

Constant Craving
Are you suddenly craving a glazed donut, or maybe some pizza? There's a reason for that. Here are the five most common cravings, and what they mean:
Juicy steak? A craving for red meat could mean your lacking iron. A healthier alternative would be a dark leafy green such a spinach.
Baked goods. If you want rich or gooey, your blood sugar levels could be crying out. A piece of fruit or glass of juice could take the edge off.
People who crave chocolate might be low on dopamine and serotonin in the brain, which effect energy and mood. Opt for dark chocolate, and avoid the lighter chocolates which have more sugar.
If fried food would hit the spot, you might really want some sodium. Go for some salted nuts instead.
Craving pizza could mean you're more than just hungry, you could be lacking calcium and fatty acids found in cheese and olive oil. Go ahead and eat the pizza, just opt for healthy toppings.

Hot Laptop
High temperatures can be a big problem for laptops. You might notice that fan running constantly, or your computer might just shut down completely. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Avoid using a laptop in direct sunlight, even indoors.
Any soft surface, including your lap, is going to really heat things up and block the cooling vents on the side and bottom.
Other heat shedding sources near your computer just makes the fan work harder. Try to keep some distance between your laptop and other lights and electronics.
Air circulation is key. Your laptop should have some rubber footings on the bottom that lets some air circulate underneath where that hot battery is. A few erasers under the back corners is an easy fix for better cooling.
If your laptop overheats and shuts off, and you can't turn it back on, don't panic, and don't keep trying to turn it on. Close the top, turn it over, and give it time to cool off. In the meantime, find a cooler area or surface to use it in to prevent the next overheat.

Gut Instinct
Nobody likes to be wrong, but believing you're always right can lead to some really bad decisions. When it comes to important choices, in personal relationships or professional strategies, you might need more than your gut instinct to go on.
Remove your ego. Remind yourself that in the long run, the truth will benefit you more than being right.
Seek disagreement. That devil's advocate could be doing you a big favor. Some well intentioned friends or family members can misguide you by simply agreeing with you.
Google effectively. When gathering information, be careful not to search what you want to believe, try to seek out some opposing views or use open-ended searches to get more balanced information.

Take Note
Handwriting has been analyzed for centuries, but in this era of less actual writing, your style can stand out even more. Here's what it's saying about you:
Small script: You may come across as introverted and reclusive. On the other hand, it suggests you're detail oriented and methodical.
Large letters: Big script, big personality. These types don't mind being the center of attention.
Downward-slanting: Even if your not grumpy or a pessimist, this note suggests you are.
Upward-slanting: There's some good energy there. The reader is subconsciously looking up.
Bold strokes: Chances are you're in control, but press down too hard and you could look aggressive.
Faint strokes: This writer is probably easy going and sensitive, but don't go too light handed, it can also look weak and tired.

Good Old Tie
There's something about a nice tie for a man that never really goes out of style, and it turns out ties have been in style a REALLY long time. In 221 BC, China's first emperor and his life size terra cotta army were entombed, each wearing a necktie. Early Roman orators wore neckerchiefs to keep their vocal cords warm. In 1784, an English fashion authority was said to be the first guy to use a neck cloth for sheer style. But it was the French, of course, who came up with the first variation of a designer tie in the 1920's, made from expensive materials with elaborate patterns.
In the 1800's, touching another man's tie, or cravat as it was called back then, was considered taboo and a challenge to a duel.

Bug the Boss
Even really good employees can be annoying. Career Builder asked some bosses to list some of the things that really bug them:
Lack of effort or careless mistakes.
Asking questions prematurely, before the information is presented.
Employees who don't get along with their co-workers, or look for faults.
Arriving a few minutes late, and leaving a few minutes early.
Making it personal in meetings. Get organized and get to the point. Save the stuff that only effects you for a one-on-one discussion.
Another common annoyance to the boss is your cell phone. Even if you put it on vibrate before that big meeting, the buzzing is distracting. You're better off opting for the silent or off mode.

Toxic Metals
Toxic metals, like mercury and lead, are all over the place. We know to avoid eating old paint, or breathing in fumes, but in some cases, we could be swallowing metal, or applying it to our skin. Here are some ways to reduce your intake:
Eat smaller fish. The big fish like tuna, swordfish and sea bass have higher levels of metal contamination.
Drink filtered water, that will reduce your metal intake. And drink plenty of it, it helps to excrete the toxins.
Choose metal-free personal products. For deodorant, antacids and cosmetics, check the ingredients and avoid the brands with aluminum in there.

Grill Magnet
One of the most popular Father's Day gifts is a new grill. But not all grills are created equal. When you check out the floor models, Consumer Reports has some things to look for:
Smooth edges. You'd be surprised at how many scrapes and cuts come from sharp edged grills.
Sturdiness. Give that demo a good shake, and avoid the wobbly models.
A lifetime warranty is best, but be sure the burners are covered for 5 to 10 years.
Side burners are great, but they add to the price. Keep in mind it's hard to control the heat on those and you might prefer using your stove for that stuff.
Stainless steel grills are the most popular, but there can be a big difference in the quality of the steel. Take a magnet with you. High quality steel is NOT magnetic. Test different areas of the grill. You'll often find that some parts of the grill are lesser grade steel and the magnet will stick. These are the spots that will be harder to clean.

Dinner Plate
Before you slop that heap of potatoes or rice on the dinner plate tonight, check out these simple tricks to make it look really appetizing:
If you are serving potatoes, rice, or another starch, make a tall, neat mound near the center of the plate.
Next, position the serving of meat or vegetables leaning against that center mound.
Keep any other elements close to the center of the dinner plate. Don't be afraid to build up instead of just out, and leave room for a favorite garnish.
You want to start arranging in the center and work your way out, leaving a wide margin of the plate showing around the edges. It automatically looks more elegant.
If your serving something simple like spaghetti, don't forget the parsley or bread crumbs. Just a sprig or sprinkle of another element can add texture and interest to an everyday dish.

You may have filed a permit for an addition that was changed or never completed, or you may be eligible for an exemption. If you find an error, there's a form you can fill out to have it corrected, and your bill adjusted. If there's something that you don't understand, make sure to ask about it.

Take a Stance
The next time you pass your reflection in a mirror or window, check your stance. Do you look defeated? A lot of us have subconscious posture habits that make us look less confident, and that can have a big effect on how we think and feel.
Consider adopting a powerful stance several times throughout the day. Head up, shoulders back, chest out. Then remind yourself to relax the muscles in your jaw, we naturally tense those up when we are stressed. Nest, give your fists a tight clench and then release, this gives your mind and body a quick recall of feeling powerful. With these quick body adjustments, you'll look and feel more poised and confident for any situation.

Shoes Required
A lot of offices get a bit more casual when it comes to attire in the summer, but it's important not to get carried away. Some summer stuff just looks plain bad in a professional atmosphere:
Flip-flops. Even if they're fancier than the drug store variety, they just look inappropriate. And yes, we CAN hear them flapping against your heel as you walk down the hall.
Sunglasses. They should come off as soon as you get to work. Not on your head, or visibly dangling from your collar or pocket.
Shorts. Unless your office is in Bermuda, they automatically take that professional image way down. Even dressier country club shorts don't count as a pair of pants.
Tank tops. Regardless of how fit you are, they just never look good in a professional environment. Too much skin is distracting, upper arms should always be covered.

In the show, one character tries to climb a hill, while another character comes along to help the first. Then, a third character is introduced and pushes the first guy down. When the babies were offered these characters to play with later, they overwhelmingly chose the helpful one. And it wasn't just a few babies, almost all of them reached for the good guy.

Is Your Refrigerator Running?
If you lose power for any length of time, there's a good chance you'll have to toss some of the food that's in your refrigerator or freezer. Here is the guideline the Red Cross suggests:
For the freezer, if it's full, the food should stay good for about 48 hours. If it's only half full, you might have to toss those contents after 24 hours. And be sure not to open the freezer during the outage.
For the refrigerator, if you don't open it, the food might only stay good for about 4 hours on a hot day. If you are not sure a particular food is ok, take its temperature with a food thermometer, if it's a perishable, and it's over 40° F, don't risk it, toss it. And don't taste it to test it, some foods look and smell fine, but if they've been at room temperature for over two hours, illness causing bacteria can start to grow really fast.

Sibling Rivalry
Sibling rivalry and childhood squabbles are part of growing up, but when those elements spill over into adulthood, there are some things you can do to strengthen that sibling bond:
Think of childhood as Las Vegas. What happened there stays there. Try to make a conscious effort to keep that stuff in the past where it belongs.
The element of surprise can work wonders. You might be expected to show up for the big stuff like holidays, weddings and graduations, but making an appearance at your niece or nephew's game, or supporting your sibling's cause can really mean a lot.
Drop the typecasting. Siblings assume roles in childhood, the responsible one, the trouble maker, the baby of the family. As adults, it's important to acknowledge you've all grown, and have gained some new positive characteristics.
It's also a good idea to avoid hot-button topics such as politics, religion or personal habits if you're trying to improve a relationship. Try to stick to topics you agree on and keep things fun and up-beat.

Dating Data
Whether it's the first date, or the fifth, there are some key questions you should ask a potential partner. Their answers can give you a lot of insight towards Mr. Wrong or Ms. Right:
Q: What's the worst thing that ever happened to you? How did you recover?
A: If he or she is still not over that worst thing, it's a big red flag.
Q: What do you like to do when you're not working?
A: This one is two-fold. You're looking for a healthy balance between work and play. Someone who says they work all the time, or doesn't like to work at all could be a problem. And hopefully they've got some outside interests that you can relate too.
Q: What do you do when you're alone? With friends?
A: Again, you're looking for a healthy balance. Someone who hates to be alone might be a concern, and someone who lacks friends or doesn't get out much could be a problem too.

How Sweet It Is

It's unique sweetness may take some getting used to, but it's got a lot more good stuff in there than plain old sugar or artificial sweeteners. It's made from the juice of sugarcane and beet sugar, and the type of molasses is determined by the degree of boiling. Light is boiled once, while dark comes from the second boiling. Blackstrap molasses, the really thick and dark variety is boiled three times, and is a good source of iron. Both Dark and blackstrap molasses are rich sources of disease-fighting antioxidants.

Children who bite their nails often have a babysitter or family member who does too, suggesting that it can be a learned habit.
Nail biting can be more than a minor bad habit, it can cause big problems. Obviously your nails and cuticles are prone to damage and infection, but biting your nails can also lead to other illness and dental problems including gingivitis.

Shade of Shades
You stand at the rotating stand trying on every pair, so which sunglasses look best on you? It's hard to tell in that tiny mirror, whith the tags still on. Let me narrow it down:
If your face is round, go for wide oval sunglasses.
If your face is oval, the frame should be slightly wider than the broadest part of your face.
If your face is long, cheer up, a strong horizontal style with details on the arms can draw the focus outwards.
If your face is wide, choose larger frames. Small glasses can make you look cartoonish, and put too much stress on the hinges.
The most flattering glasses follow the curve of the eyebrow. And choose a color that compliments your skin tone and hair color.

Weighing In
If you're trying to lose weight, a good scale can be a valuable tool. A recent study of overweight teens and adults found the ones who weighed themselves more than once a week tend to stick to a healthier diet. Experts say frequent weigh-ins help us recognize slow patterns of both weight loss and weight gain, and make us more conscious of our daily eating habits. They recommend once a day, first thing in the morning.

Driving Over 65
Teens have some pretty grim statistics when it comes to driving related accidents, but their grandparents could be at risk too. Drivers over the age of 65 are almost twice as likely to die in a car accident as those age 55 to 64. Vision, hearing, reaction and frailty can all be factors, as well as modern rules and hazards on the road they're not familiar with. If you're concerned about an elderly driver, watch for these signs:
Often honked at or tailgated by other drivers.
Trouble staying in a lane.
Often think vehicles or pedestrians have appeared out of nowhere.
Caused a recent accident.
If these factors apply, consider a refresher course in driving for them. Many insurance companies will even offer discounts to drivers who pass a refresher course. Your can find more information about it at AARP or your local AAA Club.

Lumpy Legs
Nobody likes cellulite, especially in the summer, but there are some pretty simple things you can do to look a little less lumpy. Dr. Howard Murad, author of The Cellulite Solution, says drinking extra water is a key ingredient to firming everything up. It makes the outermost skin cells stronger. But there's more you can do to smooth things out. Replace empty calories with nutrient-dense sources of moisture. For example, green tea instead of soda, fruit instead of cookies, and veggies instead of chips. Dr. Murad says this one-two punch of nutrients and water attracts more fluid to the cells and speeds up the de-lumping process.

No Bones
Every dog loves a good bone, but you're both really better off avoiding them. It's not just chicken bones that can splinter and hurt your dog, all bones pose a danger. The FDA has a pretty scary list of the damage bones can do, including breaking your dog's teeth, cutting up their mouth or tongue, or even doing damage farther down when fragments or splinters are swallowed.
Take extra caution discarding bones too. Most dogs will go to great lengths to find them in the garbage, and trying to take that bone away could wind up being a hazard for you.

Non-Stop Talker
Most of us know one, a non-stop talker. So what do you do? Go ahead, interrupt. When you're trapped in a one sided conversation, don't bother waiting for a pause, it could be a while. The best way to get their attention is to start by saying their name. They may just take a breath there. But be ready to seize that gap. Quick, summarize what they've been saying, and wrap it up with a statement that puts the topic in the past. Your last word should be firm and final, not a question or tentative tone that keeps the conversation door open.

ADD Test
If you're concerned that your child might have A.D.D., avoid caffeinated beverages before having them tested. Neurologist Alan R. Hirsh reports, in his study of first-graders, they had more behavior problems on the days they drank caffeinated cola, which cased restlessness, hyperactivity and inattention. The caffeine also led to a positive score on attention deficiency tests for kids that might otherwise have scored fine.

That Dirty Dashboard
Your car is full of bacteria and mold, especially the dashboard. Environmental microbiologist Charles Gerba explains, your vents suck in air filled with mold spores and bacteria, and they get drawn to the dashboard. In the summer, when the dashboard heats up, that bacteria starts to grow. You crank up that air conditioner, and the cool temps get those mold spores multiplying. But there's an easy fix, just wiping down the dashboard with a mild disinfectant about once a week keeps that dashboard petri dish in check.

Tick Off
Ticks sure are creepy little creatures. They're hard to spot, love you and your pets, and could be carrying Lyme disease. Here are a few ways you can keep them from getting under your skin:
In your yard, ticks like dark moist places, so be sure to move piles of cut crass or wood to a sunny spot to dry them out.
Light colored clothing really helps because it's much easier to spot a tick on them. And if you're headed to a wooded area, wear a hat! Ticks love to hide in your hair.
Ticks don't like scented oil, so opt for products containing oil of lemon or eucalyptus.
Not all tick bites will give you Lyme disease, but if you see a rash near the bite, have any joint pain or flu-like symptoms, it's best to get yourself tested. If you find a tick, stick it in a zip lock baggie with some alcohol and check with your local health department, in many areas they can check the tick itself for Lyme.

Food For Sleep
If you have trouble falling asleep at night, we've got some comfort food in the form of a sandwich that can work better than warm milk. It's peanut butter. Peanuts contain tryptophan, the amino acid that the body converts into sleep-inducing hormones. And while your at it, layer on some bananas and honey, they enhance the effect. And for your sleep sandwich, opt for whole grain bread. The melatonin in the oats make for the perfect night cap. Of course you'll probably still need the warm milk to wash it all down.

I Can't Wait
If you've got a trip, or something fun planned for this summer, savor the days leading up to it. Research shows the anticipation of something we're looking forward to usually gives us a bigger surge of pleasure than the event itself. It works for long term planning, such as a vacation that is several weeks off, or even short term outings. Looking forward to a great book, a favorite TV show, or even dinner or a movie at the end of the week can be quick mood booster each time you think of it.
It's also a good idea to plan something simple and fun to look forward to after a vacation to avoid the let down of it being over.

That old newspaper can come in handy for lots of things. Here are a few more ways you can really get your money's worth:
Weed blocker - Before planting, place a layer of newspaper over the soil, cutting slits in it for seedlings, or laying around larger plants. It helps the soil retain moisture, and protects the patch from sun which helps the weeds to grow.
Fruit ripener - Wrapping fruit, tomatoes and avocados in sheets of newspaper will help them ripen faster.
Glass cleaner - Damp newspaper not only makes for a lint free mirror and window cleaner, it also makes cleaning up broken glass easier. After picking up the large broken pieces, lay a damp newspaper over the area, the smaller shards will stick to it.

Overtime
Putting in overtime to get ahead could actually mess things up a bit in the future. According to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology, too much work over the years can leave you absent-minded, dull your creative edge, and leave you more prone to dementia. In the study, the people who worked the most overtime hours saw a significant drop in reasoning power and vocabulary skills by the time they hit their early 50's.

Dentist Drill
If just the sound of the dentist drill makes you cringe, there's good news. Some dentists now have new technology to treat cavities, and it's painless. They use ozone gas to clear the decay from the tooth without drills or fillings. After the treatment, the tooth is re-mineralized with a special paste and rinse, and the surface is restored.
For large cavities, a bit of drilling may still be necessary, but here's more good news. Those big novocain shots are gradually being replaced by a computer-guided wand with a super-fine needle that we'll hardly feel at all.

21st Century Syndrome
There's a new ailment out there called 21st Century Syndrome. It's also known as Adrenal Fatigue, and it's triggered by dealing with the stress of living in the modern world. Some of the symptoms include:
Feeling tired and irritable.
Low sex drive.
Craving for salt.
Digestion problems.
Difficulty concentrating.
Experts say we're overworking our adrenal glands, and too much stress can burn these tiny organs out. A diet rich in whole grains can help, along with vitamin supplements, regular exercise and recreation.

Feeling Bloated
If you're feeling a bit bloated, check the ingredients in your chewing gum. A lot of them contain sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol or xylitol, which your body can't fully digest. They linger in the belly where bacteria feeds on them, which produces gas and swelling in there. The same goes for a lot of sugar free candy.
Carbonated drinks and salty foods are common big belly bloater. But don't worry about drinking too much water, it actually helps to flush the sodium out of our body which reduces the bloat.

Sunburn Relief
If you've got sunburn, beware of some remedies. They could actually make things worse. Applying butter, oil, and certain strong ointments to sunburned skin can really slow down the healing process and add to the discomfort by irritating the the already tender area. Applying a cool, soothing cream or aloe is your best bet to relieve some pain and keep the area moist. Soaking a cloth in cool milk, not cold, and applying it to your skin helps too. The milk creates a protein film that temporarily makes the skin more elastic.
Drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. It's important to stay well hydrated for your skin to start healing.

Don't Be Shy
About half of all Americans describe themselves as shy. According to Dr. Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Reach Institute, shy people feel as if they have mirrors all around them. He explains that for many people, shyness can be more than feeling timid, it's actually excessive self-consciousness. Most shy people admit they force themselves to socialize and make friends, but if they are preoccupied about how they're coming across, that can be a very difficult task.
If you get that wave of self consciousness in a social situation, try to remind yourself that a lot of people are actually more preoccupied with themselves, and most likely won't even notice what you might be feeling insecure about.

33% of those asked believe the universe began with the big bang.
57% of people believe in global warming. That's down from 71% in 2008.
And when it comes to the paranormal, another study revealed that people who aren't particularly active in religion are more apt to believe Big Foot or consult a psychic.

It consists of images representing spoken words, phrases or even full sentences.
Some skeptics think iConji might be difficult to get the hang of at first. But not that long ago, some of us were all thumbs sending that first text message. There's a good chance we'll soon be thumbing hieroglyphics like seasoned techno cavemen.

First Date
Online dating is nothing new, but more and more people are networking online, and meeting in person, and there are always risks involved. To keep it safe and fun:
Ask lots of questions, find out everything you can about your new friend, and watch for inconsistencies.
Don't rule out a background check. It will help you verify location, age, marital status and criminal record.
Keep your wallet closed. There are swindlers and thieves out there, and they know how to prey on unsuspecting people.
The ideal first date is a weekday lunch in a busy restaurant. Drive yourself, and be sure to let at least one close friend or relative know exactly where you're going.
It's a good idea to avoid alcohol which can impair your judgement. Split the bill on your first time out, and be sure to have a fully charged cell phone with you and turned on.

Clean grills with hot, soapy water before using them.
Make sure coolers and containers start out really clean.
Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meats, cooked foods, and produce.
Use a meat thermometer to be sure those burgers, ribs, chicken or steaks are done.
Keep everything refrigerated until the last minute. In hot weather, don't keep food out for more than an hour.

Business Lunch
If you've got a lunch or dinner planned with a potential boss or client, don't let your manners blow it for you. Here are a few reminders of basic business meal etiquette:
The napkin goes on your lap, NEVER tucked into your collar.
Sit up straight, and mind your elbows. Of course they shouldn't be on the table, but they shouldn't be bumping your neighbor either.
When your meal is served, wait until everyone is served before you begin.
If it's a group, offer side dishes around the table, and hold them for the person next to you.
Refrain from gesturing with your cutlery. And be sure to rest them quietly on the plate between bites, not on the table.
Break your bread into bite size pieces before buttering or eating it.
Avoid eating or drinking too fast. It's best to try to match the pace of your table mates.

It all depends on the species, and the conditions, but some perennials can live from three to three thousand years. For some plants, one rough season can prevent them from flowering which they need to do to fruit again and live on.
Scientists say there is a plant in the scrublands of California that started it's life during the last Ice Age. The Jurupa Oak is estimated to be about 13,000 years old. And there's a lone Norway Spruce in Sweden that stands only 13 feet tall which researches say has been growing for 9,550 years.

Customer Service
There are few things more infuriating than bad customer service. But there are some basic steps you can take to increase the odds of getting what you deserve:
Be nice. It's as simple as that. Being demanding or angry with the person who's trying to help usually doesn't motivate them to try harder.
Follow the rules. Try to be reasonable if you've made a mistake on your end. In some cases, if you missed a deadline, or lost your receipt, the person assisting you just can't break the rules.
Don't take no for an answer. If you're not getting the service you deserve, stay calm and try climbing the chain of command in a civil manner.
Get the name. Before you start requesting, kindly ask the person you're dealing with for their first and last name, and a phone number. It's in their best interest to treat you with respect if they'd like a good review.

Spring and Fall are the most common hay fever seasons, but it turns out hay and fevers have nothing to do with it. Technically, hay fever is called allergic rhinitis, and it's an allergic response to airborne substances, usually from trees, grasses and ragweed. The most common symptoms are runny nose, headache, watery eyes, coughing and itchy skin.
The reason allergic rhinitis got dubbed as hay fever is because symptoms would usually strike during hay harvesting season when all those other pollens were in the air.

It naturally makes for more interesting pictures. For landscape shots, try the same thing, by positioning the horizon in the top third. e-Insomia
For a lot of us, electronics, particularly laptops and smartphones, could be interfering with our sleep patterns. That seemingly harmless glow can stimulate our brains and really mess things up according to sleep experts. When we use electronics close to bedtime, the light they shed actually makes us more awake, and can delay our sleep signals. It's different than reading at night with light shed on a paper surface. Light is shed directly into our eyes from electronics which tells your brain it's time to be alert.
It's best to turn off any backlit gadgets 2 hours before going to bed. If you can't seem to go without that last log in or computer read right before bed, consider computer glasses which reduce the blues that trigger our brains.

You should feel significantly better after NOT MORE than three months with your psychiatrist or psychologist.
You should feel they are actively striving to defeat your symptoms, not just observing them or comforting you.
After 4 months, visit with another specialist to compare, they might be more creative in delivering effective help for you, and be a better fit.

Bad Press
Bad behavior in the workplace is nothing new, but in today's social media world, bad press can be just as dangerous. Inappropriate comments which used to be uttered behind closed doors or around the water cooler, can now be posted for the world to see. Even from your home computer, the information you put out there can be impossible to control. Posting a seemingly harmless comment or video of something funny that happened in the office could go viral, embarrassing you, your co-workers, and the company.
According to employment attorney John Anthony, if it's something you wouldn't want to see in the L.A. Times, or send directly to your boss in an e-mail, don't post or tweet it. It can become public and stay out there forever. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but chances are, any negative press is a really big deal to the company you work for, and can be grounds for firing or even a law suit.

Vegetable Rinse
Washing our fruits and vegetables is absolutely necessary to rid them of surface dirt and pesticides, but what about potential bacteria? Unfortunately, that rinse, or even a scrub just won't do the trick. Most bacteria can't be washed off. It's rare, but bacteria in soil can be taken up by the roots of plants and stay inside the plant's veins.
The good news is our bodies are equipped to deal with certain types and amounts of bacteria, and of course we don't want to go without fruits and veggies. You still want to wash them thoroughly and give any rough surfaces some extra attention. It's important to take heed to any warnings of contaminated crops and avoid them all together.

Dumb Sex
Birds do it, bees do it, but when we do it, it makes us dumb! Dr. Belisa Vranich, author of He's Got Potential, explains that when our brains are stimulated by flirting or arousal, something she calls Sex Logic kicks in. Both men and women become more gullible and find it harder to think outside of the situation or make rational decisions. That's because when the limbic system gets fired up, the judgement area of the brain can head south.
Generally speaking, men are more prone to Sex Logic. It can take a lot less to stimulate that part of their brain, in some cases just a visual or a thought. For most women, Sex Logic peaks a few days a month, during ovulation.

Dramatic Cut
People who are frequently changing their hair style could be searching for more than a new look. According to psychotherapist Heather Turgeon, hairstyles are one of the most obvious, defining changes we can make to our appearance. But if the way your hair looks interferes with your life or causes you stress, there's often more at the root of it all. It can go beyond having fun with a new style, and indicate there may be a bigger issue in your life you'd rather be changing.
It's common for some people to make drastic cuts after a break up or career change, and especially during pregnancy. Our hair is something we can control, and it's empowering to make changes when we feel like other aspects of our life are out of our control.

Money Music
You've probably got some favorite songs for walking, or working out, or relaxing, but what about paying the bills? Experts say certain rhythms can actually help you manage your finances more efficiently. Here's what they say:
Paying the bills, opt for a song that's 100 bpm, or beats per minute. That tempo relieves stress. Example, Staying Alive by the Bee Gees.
Long term investments, kick it up a notch to 130 bpm. That should help you focus. Example, The Beatles, I Want to Hold Your Hand.
Making a big investment, like buying a car or booking a vacation, let's take it down to about 70 to 85 beats per minute. This boosts confidence. Example, Just the Way You Are, Billy Joel.

Pre Prom Primping
If you've got a big event like a prom or a wedding in the next few weeks, go ahead and start primping now. One of the biggest complaints of a fancy affair are blisters! Those shoes might look perfect, but it's a good idea to break them in first, or they'll be killing you on the big day. Wear them around in the house, and you'll find out where they hurt in plenty of time to protect the sore spots. And that goes for the guys too!
It's also a good time to start experimenting with makeup and hair style. You'll be glad you did when the big day arrives, last minute snafus can eat up lot's of precious primping time.

Pillow Toss
You've had that favorite pillow for how long? If it's been 2 years, it's probably gotta go. The average pillow has over a pound of dust mites and dead bug particles inside! Here are a few more of our favorite things who's days may be numbered:
Toothbrush: Replace them every 3 months, or sooner if you see bent or frayed bristles.
Loofah sponge: After 3 - 6 weeks, they can cause acne and other skin problems. If you can't bear to part with it, soak it overnight in water with a splash of bleach.
And don't get too attached to that bottle of bleach, that's only good for 3 - 6 months. You're better off bonding with that jar of honey, it can stay with you indefinitely.

Auto Pilot
How do you avoid one of the most dangerous roads? You don't. It's your own. A recent study revealed the danger zones were those most familiar to drivers. German scientists monitored the brains of volunteer drivers, and on familiar roads, those brains were a lot less active and shifted into autopilot. On unfamiliar routes, those drivers were much more alert and had faster reflexes avoiding unexpected hazards. Changing your route frequently can boost the safety level. They found chewing gum or opening the window can also help prevent that autopilot shift.

Flip Flops
More and more kids and teens are complaining about aching feet that we normally associate with older or overweight people. The reason, flip flops. According to podiatrist Marybeth Crane, flip-flops are great for the beach or as an alternative to being barefoot, but they've become so popular as everyday wear for so many kids that there's been a big increase in foot problems. Flip-flops force you to grip with your toes, and walk with an unnatural gate. Some of the flip-flop fallout includes:
Sore arches and heels and inflamed Achilles tendons.
Heel calluses, from the slapping.
Hammer toes, from the gripping.
Fungal infections between the toes from the thongs.
For those who can't go without flip-flops, the kind with arch support and contoured soles are the best choice, and try to avoid wearing the same pair every day.

Jonny Bowden, author of The Most Effective Ways to Love Longer explains, kiwi has the highest level of vitamin C of any fruit, and contains phyto-nutrients. Volunteers who ate a kiwi every day experienced improvements in their skin in just a few weeks! And there's more good kiwi news, the National Eye Institute reports that kiwi helps protect against cataracts.
And for those of you who hate peeling kiwis, don't bother! That fuzz is edible and that's where a lot of the fiber and nutrients are.

Ouch!
Regardless of what language we speak, when something hurts, we all make a similar sound. Ouch, owww, aaah, take your pick. They're all natural pain killers. Jonathan Goldman, author of The 7 secrets to Sound Healing, explains that making long, unconstricted, open vowel sounds is a natural reflex that triggers the release of opiates in the brain. Music therapists call it toning. Some people can even master the reflex to tone their way through dental or other medical procedures without anesthetic. Not great news for the patient in the next room.

Office Alert
Some jobs look a lot better on paper than from behind the desk. Career Builder has some warning signs to look for during your interview:
If the interviewer takes a phone call, that's a bad sign. You deserve the same respect they would like, and you might want to reconsider working for them.
If the interview feels more like a marathon, proceed with caution. Especially if you're not offered a bathroom break, snack or glass of water.
Ask why the position is available. If they reveal there's a big turnover, or that people have quit after a short period of time, there's probably a good reason for that.
Pay close attention to any office chatter you may be able to hear. If there is a lot of chaos, or arguments over productivity or payments, you could end up with more than you bargained for.

Paper Weight
When it comes to paperwork, some of us hold on to those bills and records longer than we need. Here's a quick guide to lightening that paper weight:
When you put away your 2009 tax return, 2002 can go. Tax returns should be kept for 7 years.
Bank statements can be purged after one year, unless you use them to prove deductions on your tax returns, then the 7 year rule applies.
When you get your utility bill, you can trash the one from last month. Better yet, consider going paperless.
As far as really important papers are concerned, they should be kept completely separate from other papers, in a safe deposit box. These would include birth and death certificates, social security cards, marriage licenses and car and house titles. And for all that paper you're purging, use a shredder. They're inexpensive and could save your identity.

Fur Is Flying
If the fur is flying in your house, remember your pet is trying to lose their winter coat. It's time to grab that brush. Some of them love it, some don't, but brushing their coats weekly, if not more, will really cut down on the fur factor in your house.
Also, if your dog has just had a haircut, or has a short or thin coat, you should really consider some sun screen. Go with a formula made for pets that won't be toxic if they lick it off.

Apple Shaped?
If you'd like to slim your waistline a bit, opt for apples. Adults who eat apples, or apple products, have smaller waistlines, less abdominal fat and lower blood pressure. Apples have pectin, which not only helps prevent fat from being absorbed, but also helps to release fat deposits. Apples are also a great source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. And if the apples get boring, go for some lemons, grapefruit, oranges and limes. They're bursting with vitamin C which helps dilute and release fat from the body.

Beeware!
Don't you hate when that lone bee just won't buzz off. If it's hovering around your head, or orbiting your aura, it could be your perfume, your shampoo, or even your clothes. To a bee, some of us look or smell like a big beautiful flower. They obviously love sweet or flowery smells, and bright colors really catch their attention. If you know you'll be outside, dress in khaki, white or beige if you want to avoid attracting bees. And if you're eating, that could be a problem too. Wasps are going to want in on your sweet treat. And if you're drinking a soda, they love to climb right into that can or sneak into that straw. Check before you sip!
