If you’re tempted to download that app to protect you against skin cancer – don’t bother...


There are a lot of handy apps out there for all sorts of uses – detecting skin cancer isn’t one of them...

Although there are several popular smartphone apps that promise to provide feedback regarding your risk, dermatology experts aren’t convinced they are helping at all. As a matter of fact, they could actually be harmful to your health.

In most cases, these apps prompt you to take photos of any skin lesions and then submit them for analysis. Of the apps tested, none of them were accurate enough to offer you any protection. Overall, they incorrectly classified 30% of melanoma legions as benign.
