Is your boss a pain in the neck? How to deal with that...

Most of us have worked for a difficult boss at one time or another...

If that time is now for you, here is some advice from Lynn Taylor, author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant:”

• The Micromanager: Try to take the extra attention as a compliment. Over-communicating with regular status reports may help to keep this boss off your back a bit.

• The Hands-Off Supervisor: Lack of guidance can set you both up for a fall. Insist on setting up a regular meeting to discuss projects and priorities.

• The Workaholic: Try not to let their lack of a life rob you of yours. If your boss barrages you with business after hours, respond with a plan to handle that during office hours.

• The Shouter: The best approach is to keep your own volume in check, or even lower it. Lack of reaction can be very effective with someone who’s overdoing it.

• The Manipulator: Dealing with a weasel can be worrisome. You’ll need to get in the habit of documenting as much of your communication as possible. Email is almost always the preferred method here. And don’t forget to cc the appropriate players.
