If you or your pet gets skunked – should you use tomato juice?

If someone in your household has been sprayed by a skunk – don’t bother filling the tub with tomato juice...

It may or may not help but here is a more effective de-skunk protocol.

• Resist the urge to wash the whole victim. You want to avoid spreading the skunk oil around.

• Locate areas that have been directly hit. Soak up as much of the oil as possible with paper towels or an old towel you won’t mind throwing away later.

• Wash the target areas first. Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent are your best tools. Mix up a solution and use that on the smelly spots, avoiding the eyes.

Depending on the severity of the skunk attack, you may need to repeat the stinky spot treatment. Once you’ve washed those areas as thoroughly as possible, go ahead with the overall bath or shower.
