Have you seen the latest viral “privacy” post on Facebook? Should you post it too?

If you’re a Facebooker, you’ll probably start seeing the latest viral status post...

...from some of your well-intentioned, NON-legal friends. It goes something like this:

“Facebook is now a publicly traded entity. Anyone can infringe on your right to privacy once you post on this site. It is recommended that you and other members copy, paste and post this into your status to protect yourself.”

It goes on into a very legal sounding “PRIVACY NOTICE” strictly prohibiting other people, including the United Sates Federal Government, from disclosing, disseminating or distributing your content, blah blah blah.

This is the same “legal notice” that circulated a few years ago, before Facebook was a publicly traded company. The fact that Facebook has issued stocks traded on the open market has nothing to do with privacy rights. Before activating your account, you were required to agree to FACEBOOK’s legal terms, including THEIR privacy policy. Nothing you post can offer additional protection or alter that agreement.
