The next time you’re tempted to give advice – be careful what you say...

Where advice is concerned – a few words can make all the difference...

Judy Kuriansky, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to a Healthy Relationship,” has some hurtful and helpful ways to dole out your wisdom:

• Hurtful: “You should.” Most people don’t want to hear that.

• Helpful: Ask questions first. “How is this affecting you?” This opens up the door for your wonderful suggestions.

• Hurtful: “I had that problem.” This is their dilemma, not yours.

• Helpful: Ask what you can do to help. Wait until their finished to share your experience and what you learned from it.

• Hurtful: “You’ll get over it.” That does nothing to help them now.

• Helpful: Help them sort through the issue at hand before leaping into the future.
