You could be poisoning your pet!

Before you bring those plants inside for the winter – you need to know which ones could poison your pet...

Dr. Tina Wismer, medical director of the ASPCA’s poison control center, has a list of plants that are toxic:

• Lilies are poisonous to cats and can cause kidney failure.

• Certain palms such as the sago palm can also cause liver failure in cats and dogs.

• Plants with calcium oxalate crystals such as philodendrons have needles that get pushed into the tongues and gums of animals, causing drooling, vomiting and mouth swelling.

• Hibiscus, including rose of Sharon and rose of China cause nausea and could make your dog, cat or horse really sick.

• Ficus, fig trees or rubber plants can cause dermatitis, oral irritation and worse for dogs and cats.

• Aloe is toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause digestive problems, depression and anorexia.

There are plenty of houseplants that are perfectly safe for pets, including the African violet, bamboo, Boston fern, Prayer plant, spider plant and yucca.
