Captain Morgan and Jack Daniels have been immortalized in liquid form...

Captain Morgan, Johnnie Walker and Jack Daniels are more than just faces on a label – they were pretty interesting characters in their day:

• Captain Morgan was a feared Welsh pirate who married his own cousin. After plundering the Cuban coast, looting and burning Panama City, he was knighted and became the lieutenant governor of Jamaica.

• Johnnie Walker was a grocer in Scotland. The whisky he sold was all the rage. His son Alexander was the one who actually made them famous by applying his tea-blending expertise to their Old Highland Whisky, which later became Johnnie Walker Black Label.

• Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel of Tennessee was one of 13 kids. It was not his famous whiskey that did him in, but his bad temper. When he couldn’t get his safe open one morning, he freaked out and kicked it, injured his toe, contracted an infection – and died.

• The original Jose Antonio de Cuervo received a land grant from the King of Spain to start an agave farm in Mexico. The tequila company is now run by the sixth generation of Jose Cuervo’s descendants.
