If you’re the eternal optimist – I’ve got some bad news for you..

Look at the bright side – just don’t do that too often...

According to a new study, optimists could be putting themselves at risk by relying on good fortune and banking on positive outcomes. Participants were given a personality test first. Then, they were asked to consider some really unpleasant life scenarios - ranging from having their car stolen to developing an awful disease. It turns out the most optimistic participants were less likely to consider important risk factors and true statistics – which could put them at a disadvantage in real life.

Tali Sharot, a professor at University College London and author of the study, says seeing the glass half full rather than half empty can be a positive thing. It can lower stress and anxiety. It can also lower brain activity and make us less likely to take precautionary action such as practicing safe sex or saving up for retirement.
