Quick - find some snow!

How would you like to burn 3 to 4 hundred calories a half hour – just walking?

All you need is some snow – and some snow shoes. Snowshoes have been around as long as snow has, in one form or another – but modern snowshoes are becoming all the rage in the fitness world. Trudging across the tundra, mile after mile, is an intense workout that just about anyone can do. It’s a lot less expensive than some other favorite winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling – and you can do it just about anywhere, assuming there’s snow.

Snowshoeing generally burns about the same amount of calories as cross-country skiing. Those two are tops in winter workouts – and the more you weigh, the more you’ll burn. Here’s how 1 hour of snowshoeing breaks down:

• If you weigh 125 – 480 calories
• 155 pounds – 596 calories
• 185 pounds – 710 calories

Great googly moogly!  That’s 100 calories more than downhill skiing, and twice the burn of ice skating or sledding.
