You’ve probably heard that mixed breed dogs have fewer issues than purebreds – but ask a breeder and they’ll probably disagree...
Veterinarian Patty Khuly says it really depends. Generally speaking, mixed breeds tend to be hardier health-wise. They have a lower incidence of genetic disease and better longevity. Most mutts are also less prone to hip dysplasia, heart disease and cancers.
On the other hand, in many cases, purebred dogs have less behavioral issues than mutts. That’s because they’re usually introduced to their family and homes at around 8 weeks of age. The percentage of mixed breeds in shelters is a lot higher – and they’re more prone to infectious disease or behavioral problems if they’ve been there a long time. Sheltered purebreds are prone to the same problems – but there are fewer of them and they’re usually adopted faster.
