It can be tough to know when to dump your doctor – and finding another one for you or your family can be a big hassle...
That’s no reason to stick with the wrong one though. Dr. Charles Inlander, president of the consumer advocacy group People’s Medical Society, says pay attention to any doubts you’re having. You wouldn’t put up with an accountant, no matter how nice, who made mistakes on your tax returns – and the last thing you want to do is shortchange yourself or your family’s health. Here are a few tell-tale signs that it could be time to break up with your doctor:
• You have trouble booking an appointment.
• The doctor doesn’t return your calls within a reasonable time, which is usually 3 to 4 hours, assuming it’s not an emergency.
• Your concerns aren’t taken seriously, or the doctor interrupts you.
• The doctor doesn’t make an effort to establish a good rapport with you or your child.
• Procedures or potential risks and side effects are not explained in plain English.
• The doctor is impatient or condescending when you don’t understand.
• Second opinions are frowned upon.
If it is time to fire your doctor, find another one first. It’s a good idea to scope out the office and staff before making the switch. You’re under no obligation to give an explanation to your ex-doctor – but you’ll probably need to give them instructions to send records to the new doc.
