Don’t go to sleep angry” may sound cliché – but now there’s scientific evidence to back it up...
Neuroscientists at UMass Amherst released a study that says negative emotional responses get protected if you go to sleep with them. That means they don’t get processed and have some time to dig in and take hold. This advice doesn’t just apply to arguments – it includes traumatic or disturbing news and images we might expose ourselves too via the news or a movie.
When we are upset or disturbed, we may actually fall asleep faster. Sleep can act like a built-in defense mechanism. If you’ve had an argument or witnessed something unpleasant – try to resolve those feelings before going to bed and you should have less lingering effects in the morning.
