There’s something about a calm, deep voice that just screams authority...
High-pitched would have ruined Darth Vader’s force. You can use the same trick when you really need to get your point across. In a recent study, students were asked to read a statement a few times – in a lower and higher pitch than they normally speak. The students rated themselves as feeling more powerful during their deep-voice delivery. The lower voices were also perceived as more dominant by others.
By lowering our register a bit – we not only come across as a bit more authoritative to others – but we give ourselves a subconscious power boost by taking strategic control of our instrument.
