Is that jacket REALLY dry clean only?

Dry cleaning can get expensive – and some garments don’t really require it...

According to Mary Marlowe Leverette, fabric and laundry expert, a lot of items with dry clean labels can actually be gently washed and hung to dry. There are a few exceptions though. Stick to dry cleaning if the garment is:

• Structured: Most suits, jackets and tailored items are designed to hold their shape.

• Made from acetate, rayon, leather or suede: Water can damage these fabrics.

• Not colorfast: To test, put a few droplets of water on an inside seam and rub with a cotton swab. If you see any color rubbing off – dry clean only.

It’s also a good idea to designate a hanging section of your closet for dry clean only clothes. Giving them a little space will prevent them from wrinkling and keep them smelling fresher.
