A lot of married couples have a bedroom secret that might surprise you...

Do you and your partner sleep in separate beds?

About 1 in 4 couples say they do, according to a study by the National Sleep Foundation – but other polls suggest it may be closer to half.

Dr. Neil Stanley, head of one of Britain's leading sleep labs, says the trend of sleeping separately is nothing new. Historically, the shared bed wasn't even common until the industrial revolution, when people moved to overcrowded towns and cities and living space was limited. In ancient Rome, the marital bed was for one thing, and that wasn't sleeping.
