Did you know heartburn can be deadly? Risks and red flags to look for...

Most of us think of heartburn as a burning sensation in the chest – but that’s not always the case...

According to Dr. Jamie Koufman, author of “Dropping Acid,” there is another type of heartburn, known as LPR, which can be very dangerous. The symptoms may include a chronic cough, hoarseness, frequent throat-clearing, difficulty swallowing or noisy breathing. You may never experience that burning sensation. What makes it dangerous is that it is often misdiagnosed as allergies or postnasal drip.

LPR heartburn increases risk for asthma, pneumonia and even esophageal and throat cancers. If you experience symptoms such as coughing or a lump in the throat sensation after eating or lying down, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist.
