If you rely on caller ID – beware of spoofing! What it is and who is doing it...

If you check that incoming number before answering the call – keep in mind it could be a spoof...

Spoofing is the latest trick of choice of hackers and identity theives. New technology enables them to make someone else’s name or number appear on your phone when they call.

Spoofing is dangerous because it enables the thieves to pose as your bank or credit card company. Consumer protection agencies advise us to be very careful and to question anyone who is looking for sensitive information. Never give your PIN number, password or personal data to someone asking for it over the phone. It’s important to remember that your bank, credit card company and utility providers already have your information and would not be asking for it during an unsolicited phone call.
