There is a right way and a wrong way to pack a car for college.

Breaking every rule.
If you’re packing up the car to head off to college soon, start with the mini-fridge.

It’s no easy task fitting an entire dorm room full of stuff into the back of a car and these tips will help:

• Heavy stuff first: You want those items as far forward in the cargo area as possible, on the floor if possible. This is especially important if you’re loading an SUV. The extra weight should be in the center of the vehicle to reduce the odds of a rollover.

• Don’t pack the vehicle to the roof. You’ll need that visibility while driving and when backing up to the loading dock. Too much cargo impacts handling, steering, fuel economy and tires.

• Secure your stuff. Blow dryers, lamps and laptops can become deadly projectiles in an emergency.
