Don’t squeeze the melons. There are better ways to check for ripeness.

How do you choose a watermelon? Squeezing it won’t do much good.

The best approach is to check it’s field spot. That’s the side of the melon that was resting on the ground as it grew. A ripe melon has a yellow field spot. The heaviest watermelons are usually at their peak.

When choosing a cantaloupe, you’ll want to give it a good sniff. The stem and blossom ends of a ripe cantaloupe will smell sweet and ready to eat. The same goes for pineapples, mangoes and peaches.
