The next time you introduce yourself – make it count...

Hello reader, I'm Anne, Anne Rondepierre, writer and broadcaster...

You already know how important a good first impression can be – and the way you introduce yourself is usually it. A strong self-introduction can make all the difference in a personal or professional situation – and it should go something like this:

• Start with your greeting and the name of the other person, if you know it. “Hi Jane…”

• Now it’s time for your name. In a professional setting, say it twice. “Hi Jane, I’m John, John Doe.” Make sure to slow down and say your name clearly.

• Finally, add your title or a compliment. “Hi Jane, I’m John, John Doe, king of the world, it’s so nice to meet you.”

The rest will come naturally. Remember, your tone of voice and body language are just as important as your words. Smile and make eye contact. Don’t forget the firm, full-handed, web-to-web handshake. Fresh breath is really important too – have a mint first.
