Before you light that pumpkin spice or pine candle – check the wick...

If you like scented candles, you should be really careful about which ones you buy and burn..

Some of them can send the air quality in your house plummeting. Candles with metal in the wick contain lead which is emitted into the air when you burn them. Elevated lead levels in the air can be a serious health hazard, especially to those very young, old, or with a compromised immune system.

When you buy a scented candle, be sure there is not a thin metal wire in the wick. Stick to wicks that are wax coated for sturdiness or all cotton. It’s also a good idea to avoid slow burning candles that feel greasy to the touch. Those contain additives that can be a hazard. Keep your wicks trimmed to avoid unnecessary pollution and avoid letting them burn down to the metal weight that holds the wick in place.
