Has your dog mastered the look of shame?

If your dog gives you that sad puppy look when scolded, don’t be fooled.

According to animal behaviorists, dogs don’t feel shame. That look is more likely just a reaction to your seemingly overreaction of whatever it is your dog has done. Experts say dogs aren’t capable of connecting your behavior to the dirty deed. That look of shame can become learned behavior over time. The canine thinking being “this body language calmed the human down before, I’ll try it again.”

If you don’t believe the experts, take note of your dog’s guilty expression any time you are upset or raise your voice. They’re likely to put on the sad puppy face regardless of what they’ve done or haven’t done.
