Is your heater running? You better go catch it! Where it’s sneaking out of your house...

It’s no surprise that costly heat seeps out of our homes through windows and doors...

But we’re losing some through our outlets too. Although it’s not much, experts say about 2% of our heat is lost there. Here are some other common escape routes:

• Access hatches, such as a ceiling opening into an unheated attic: 31%
• Air leakage from ducts: 15%
• Recessed lights, wiring and plumbing: 13%
• Fireplace dampers and chimneys: 14%
• Air leakage from fans and vents: 4%
• Windows: 10%
• Doors: 11%

If you think your door is secure, try the dollar test. Put a dollar bill over the threshold and close the door. If you can pull the bill out, there’s too much space. Consider this: a 1/8 inch gap under a 36 inch wide door will let in as much cold air as a 2 ½ inch hole punched in the wall.
