If you’d like to double the odds that someone will say “yes” to you, say this...

The next time you really need someone to say “yes” - use the old “Only if you want to” trick...

A recent study on persuasion technique is suggesting that adding this simple phrase, or one like it, can double your chances of success.

The best approach is to keep your request short and sweet. Be direct and sincere and then follow the request with a phrase such as “but you are free to say no,” or “only if you want to.” Reminding the other person that they are in control softens the favor and makes it harder to say “no”. The tone you use is important too. Even the slightest hint of insincerity or sarcasm may be perceived as passive-aggressive and will backfire.
