Is your résumé typed in Times New Roman? The font you need to change it to...

Even if you’re not looking for a job right now, you should be freshening up your résumé on a regular basis...

Your first step: Check the font. Most résumés are typed in Times New Roman, the default font for Microsoft Word. You’ll need to change that. Times New Roman doesn’t read well on-screen and lacks some of the options you’ll need for your next step. Change your font to Georgia. It’s more reader-friendly and is available on all computers.

Once you’ve changed your font to Georgia, you’ll notice your perfect formatting is gone. Don’t panic. Georgia is a bit larger so you’ll need to take it down a notch or two to 10 or 9 point. Your next step should be to eliminate any indentations. The use of caps, bold and underlined will give each section enough separation and your résumé will look a lot more organized. You’ll also have more room with your larger font.
