Newsflash: women suffer from mood swings – but it’s NOT always hormones...

If you’re tempted to blame that mood swing on hormones – do so at your own risk!

Most women don’t take too kindly to having their moods or emotions blamed on hormones. Hormones do sometimes influence mood – but there are some other triggers that could be to blame for that swing:

• Stress and anxiety: Men are prone to this too. If we’re overwhelmed it’s only natural that it may affect our mood. Addressing the source of anxiety or lightening the load will be a lot more productive than blaming the hormones.

• Depression: Some people suffering from depression actually experience highs and lows or become agitated rather than sad. This scenario needs to be recognized and treated - not blamed on something else.

• Caffeine and sugar: These two stimulants can be a big influence on mood when they start to wear off. The same is true for alcohol. Those suffering from mood swings really need to pace and limit their intake.
• Lack of sleep: Everyone needs about 8 hours of sleep a night. Sleep deprived people wind up irritable – and yes – moody.
