A recent study found that those with no phone in sight were perceived as more likeable, sincere and trustworthy. This held true in both personal and professional situations. 

Even if you have no intention of using your phone, it should be off and out of sight. Just seeing someone’s phone suggests that there may be an interruption at any moment and that you are not their top priority.
