Whitening Toothpaste

Do whitening toothpastes really work? Yes – but there’s a down side...

Just about every brand of toothpaste has a whitening formula – and some of them really work. However, according to Vincent Mayher, president of the Academy of General Dentistry – whitening toothpastes can actually scour away the surface of your teeth along with the stains. And, if you have sensitive teeth, they can even lead to more pain. There are some gentler whitening pastes on the market – but you’ll need to check the RDA level – that’s the Relative Dentin Abrasivity. If the RDA in your brand is over 100, it’s considered highly abrasive.

Dr. Mayher says sand-papering your teeth is NOT the best way to whiten them. We’re better off sticking to whitening trays, strips – or a trip to the dentist.
