ABOUT THE BOOK

In his book As Close as the Moon, Patrick McGrail shares a heartwarming story of a young boy who must bid his father goodbye as he prepares for deployment to Iraq.
• How families sacrifice when soldiers deploy

“When I deployed, I only needed to worry about my mission. My family, on the other hand, had to take care of everything without me and without all of the support I had.”

• Soldiers have the courage to go, families have the courage to let go.

“We often talk about a Soldier’s courage to go to war but we tend to overlook the courage it takes to watch a spouse, child, father or mother march away towards a place where you know people are waiting to do them harm.”

• Staying Connected

“I was able to communicate with my family almost daily but staying connected takes more than just chatting. It takes sharing something meaningful that somehow crosses the 7,000 miles between us in a tangible way. My sons and I shared our story of the moon. This story held us together. It kept us connected.
