If you’re investing in poinsettias, don’t kill them with water. How to do it right...

Poinsettias are festive and in abundance right now...

If you’re bringing some into your house you’ll need to know how to take care of them. Most people water their poinsettias too little or too much. You can’t let them dry out but you don’t want them wet to the roots either. For just the right amount of water, put 4 ice cubes in a 4 inch pot and let them melt. Use 6 ice cubes for 6 inches and so on. The trick is to get the soil moist about 1/3 of the way down. Add more ice cubes if necessary.

Poinsettias are indigenous to hot climates like Mexico and South America. They prefer their water in slow doses and will thrive in a warmer spot in your house. Make sure to remove that decorative foil they often come in. That just traps excess moisture and gasses near the roots and will cause them to rot.
