Could your child’s headache be a migraine? When to call the doctor...

Most adults know if they’re experiencing a migraine headache...

It can be harder for a child to determine or explain those symptoms. Most children who do suffer with migraines have inherited them. If they run in your family, there’s a higher chance your children will wind up with them too someday. Kids who experience car or motion sickness are also more likely to have migraines. Children as young as 4 years of age have been diagnosed. Here are some migraine signs to watch for:

• Pain on both sides of the head (especially in younger children).
• One-sided head pain (especially in older children).
• Recurrent vomiting.
• Frequent unexplained dizzy spells.
• Recurring abdominal pain.
• Increased eye tearing.
• Visual changes.

If your child experiences one or more of those symptoms, talk to your doctor. It’s also important to keep headache diaries which can help you identify and avoid potential triggers.
