Replacing a car key can cost a small fortune these days. How to do it for less...

Losing a car key is a BIG deal these days...

Even a basic key fob will cost $50 to $90 to replace at a dealer. Here’s what you can expect to pay to replace some of the other common key types at a dealership:

• Transponder keys: A basic key with a chip in the plastic head: $250

• Laser-cut keys: Also known as a sidewinder key with a thicker shank: $150 - $250

• Switchblade keys: $200 - $300

• Smart keys: Plastic fobs without shank: $200 - $400

If you do need to replace one of these key styles, you can save some significant money by avoiding the dealership who will charge for labor. According to Edmunds.com, it’s worth your effort to seek out an auto-locksmith. They now has the necessary machines to replace many of these key types and will charge up to 30% less for the job. The one exception is the smart key. There’s no avoiding the dealership or automaker for that one.
