A recent Gallup poll surveyed people in 148 countries and Panamanians were the happiest and most positive people out there. It seems a lot of South America is smiling. Rounding out the top five are Paraguay, El Salvador, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago.

As for the unhappiest people on earth, Singapore is the saddest. Afghanistan, Iraq, Haiti, Yemen, Serbia and Armenia could also use a little cheering up.

If you’re wondering how the Europeans feel about it all, Germany and France tied with Somaliland, in 47th place. Ireland is fairly happy in 15th place – but not as happy as Canada in the top 10. The United States has its ups and downs and fell to number 33 on the positive outlook scale.
