Dental floss is actually pretty amazing stuff...
Nothing gets between your teeth quite like dental floss. It turns out that floss is perfect for some other jobs too. Joan and Lydia Wilen, aurthors of “Bottom Line’s Household Magic,” have some floss-worthy tasks:
• Fix your glasses. If you ever lose one of those tiny screws at the front of the frame, thread a piece of floss through there, knot and cut off the excess. That will hold until you get a repair kit.
• Sew a button back on with dental floss - just make sure to get it in the right spot because it will stay put for a LONG time.
• Cut the cake. Just use a piece a few inches longer than the diameter and use that sturdy taught floss to divide it into clean, straight pieces. It’s perfect for cheesecake and works great on soft cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cranberry sauce and even some types of bread.
• Clean the furniture – and other hard to reach spots. Floss is great on cleaning between cracks and crevices around the stove, sink and counter.
• Tie it up. You can tie just about anything with dental floss and you won’t need that third hand to hold it in place. Floss can even substitute for a missing or broken shoe lace. You can also use UNWAXED floss to tie up meat or poultry for cooking – it won’t burn or melt.
Got a leaky faucet? No, dental floss can’t really fix that – but it can kill that dripping sound. Cut a piece long enough to tie around the spout and let it hang to the drain. The drops will quietly glide down and you’ll stay sane until the plumber gets there.
