Did your kid have coffee this morning?
You probably know that power and energy drinks are no good for kids. Here are 5 more beverages we shouldn’t be sharing with them:
• Alcohol – sounds like a no-brainer but even giving kids an occasional sip can result in some impairment. Alcohol affects growth and development, memory and learning much more so in kids than adults.
• Coffee may seem harmless – but most kids get a lot of caffeine from other sources and that cup of coffee probably puts them way over the recommended daily max.
• Sweet tea is super popular – but sends glucose levels soaring. It’s got the equivalent of one sugar packet per liquid ounce!
• Soft drinks are even worse – especially for young kids. They are somewhat addictive and drinking them at a young age can really encourage a lifelong habit.
• Watch out for soy milk. It contains phytic acid which may cause growth problems in children. Pasteurized skim or low fat cow’s milk is the way to go.
Juice drinks are just soda in sheep's clothing. Even real fruit juice isn't all that great. Some varieties have more sugar than soda - and the acidic kind is really hard on your teeth. Stick to small servings or water it down.
