Most of us are throwing out the best part of our produce....

You’re probably throwing away the most valuable part of your produce...

The tough ends of celery, lettuce and onions could be the gifts that keeps on giving - if you plant them. Here are some simple ways to produce your own produce:

* Green onions: That bottom inch contains the white bulb and roots. Plant those in a pot, covering everything but a bit of the stem and in one to two weeks, new green onion stalks will emerge. Snip them off as needed and they’ll grow back.

* Romaine lettuce: That tough stub will grow a new head if you like. Just slice an X in the bottom and sit it in a dish with a little water. Keep that in a sunny spot and replenish the water every few days. When new leaves and roots begin to form, plant that in a pot and you’ll be eating it in a few weeks.

* Celery: Use the same technique as the lettuce, and start the tough stub in a dish of water. Once your celery sprouts roots and leaves, transfer a pot and watch it grow.
