Grapefruit and some medicines don’t mix. New warnings...

You may have heard that it’s a bad idea to wash down certain medications with grapefruit juice...

That warning is real and the number of potential drug interactions is increasing. Grapefruits and their juice contains a compound which can inhibit the normal breakdown of some drugs and increase the risk of overdose. People over the age of 70 are most at risk and are more prone to grapefruit-medication interaction.

Regardless of your age, be sure to check prescription labels if you like grapefruit. There are some other citrus fruits that should also be avoided with certain drugs, including limes, pomelos and Seville oranges.
