Picking the Hits

Can you predict a hit song? Your brain can...

Payoff:It seems most of us have a hidden talent – picking a hit song. In a 2007 study, scientists sampled music to a group of volunteers, aged 12 to 17 at the time. The songs they used were unfamiliar. They looked at activity in two key parts of the brain and how it responded to each sample. Without getting too scientific – the songs that triggered positive brain activity actually went on to sell more over the next few years. One of those songs was Apologize by One Republic.

Picking the hits is not a perfect science yet – it worked with about 1/3 of the songs sampled. Picking the non-hits was a little more accurate. None of the songs that got a negative response went on to be big sellers.
