Now that we’re a couple of weeks into college – the laundry is piling up for some students. How they can take a load off...

Forget the work load – laundry loads can prove to be a bigger challenge for a lot of college students...

Consumer Report’s in-house laundry expert has a quick course in college laundry 101:

• Find your laundry time and stick to it. It can take a while to determine the rhythm in the laundry area. When you find your sweet spot, add it to your academic schedule and don't skip that class.

• Treat stains ASAP. Carry a pocket-sized stain remover or find some liquid soap and rub it in to hold you over until laundry class.

• Separate lights and darks – it really matters. Also, if you’ve got new clothes, wash them separately.

• Lighten your loads. If you have to force the washer door shut – there’s too much in there.

• Use cold water. It’s better for your clothes and will get the job done.

• Check and clear the dryer lint trap. That’s YOUR job now. Your clothes will dry a lot faster.

• Set a timer. You want to empty the dryer as soon as it stops. You’ll have a lot less wrinkles and will prevent that fresh load from winding up on top of a sticky machine or somewhere worse if someone beats you to it.
