Can you imagine what that game or concert would sound like if nobody cheered?
That’s exactly what some experts are suggesting. According to Dr. L. Arick Forrest, Director of the Ohio State University Voice and Swallowing Disorders Clinic, we could ruin our vocal chords in just one yell. He says a loud or explosive cheer is all it takes to do some significant damage. It could produce a temporary hemorrhage or a permanent polyp that my need to be surgically removed.
Dr. Forrest says if you must cheer; consider warming up gently ahead of time. When your team scores or the band plays your favorite song, give it one single blast and avoid a series of words, hoots and hollers. Make sure to drink plenty of water and if you notice your voice is starting to crack or get raspy – stick to clapping!
