• Friends: You may be his or her best friend – but dogs are pack animals and need contact with more than two or three others. They can be human or animal – but be sure your dog gets to regularly mingle outside of your inner circle.
• Discipline: Dogs crave structure and authority – it’s essential for their mental health. Dogs that are not taught to obey will have to assume the authority, which often leads to behavioral problems.
• A job: Dogs are intelligent and need to flex their skill. Catering to their every whim deprives them of a sense of purpose. Find out what your breed likes to inherently do and develop some similar tasks into your daily routine.
• Family: You are the pack. Dogs really do want to be a member of the family. Excluding them from all human activities or outings will make them feel like an outcast.
