Home Alone

Leaving a child home alone for the first time can be both liberating – and terrifying for a parent...

How old is old enough? That varies by state – and by child. David Markenson, of the American Red Cross, says it really depends on the child’s maturity level. Once you’ve determined you’re both ready – you’ll need to have a safety plan which includes posting emergency numbers, identifying “go-to” neighbors and actually practicing what they would do in case of a fire or other emergency. Once your plan is in place, here are some specific steps for the home alone kid:

• Lock all doors and windows.

• Never open the door to strangers or delivery people.

• Never tell anyone your parents aren’t home – just say they’re busy and take a message.

• Don’t mention you’re alone online.

It’s also a good idea to enroll your child in a babysitting training course. The Red Cross provides one for 11-15 year olds. It’s a great resource to teach them some basic steps to being responsible for others – and themselves.
