Balancing Act

How’s your balance?

Good posture is important for our bodies – and good balance is important for our posture. Steven P. Weiniger, author of “Stand Taller, Live Longer,” says we should all test our balance every once in a while. It’s important that we keep ourselves symmetrical as our bodies change. Here’s how to test yours:

Stand up straight – now lift your left foot off the floor. Hold that position for 20 seconds. Now, repeat on the other side. If you wobble or have trouble maintaining that position – consider yourself asymmetrical.

You can improve your balance with a simple exercise. Stand straight with your arms straight down. Lift your left knee until your thigh is parallel with the floor. Hold that for 30 seconds, then repeat on the other side. It’s harder than it sounds. If you wobble – put your foot back down and adjust your head, shoulders and pelvis, then try again. If you do this several times a day – you’ll strengthen your abdominal muscles and hips – and become more aware of any adjustments you balance might need.
