That would be the LEFT shoulder. According to Dayna Winters, author of “Wicca: What's the Real Deal?” throwing the salt over the shoulder has a long, superstitious history. Back in the day, salt was a valuable commodity and spilling it was just asking for trouble and tempting the devil. Since everyone knows the devil sits on your left shoulder, it’s a good idea to sweep up some of that salt you spilled and toss it over your left shoulder and into his eye, rendering him blind while you clean up your mess.
