Spinach makes your muscles huge - but only if you’re Popeye. How it got overrated...

Spinach did wonders for Popeye, and vice versa!

Kids couldn’t get enough of it, in hopes of making their muscles big like Popeye’s back in the 1930’s. By some accounts, sales of spinach spiked by a third thanks to the Sailor Man.

However, the Popeye power of spinach was a bit off, thanks to a misplaced decimal point by a German chemist. In reality, there are 3.5 milligrams of iron in a serving of spinach, not 35 milligrams as he had recorded. As a matter of fact, spinach also contains oxalate, a compound that inhibits the absorption of iron, rendering it useless to the body. The good news is that spinach is a rich source of other healthy vitamins and minerals like vitamin B and folic acid.
