Are you on a heavy metal diet?

Our bodies need some metal like iron, copper and zinc - but you might be overdoing it.

Too much iron can be a problem and experts say we need to take stock of our heavy metal intake. A lot of so-called superfoods have iron and other metals in there, along with our regular diets and the water we drink. Add in a heavy metal vitamin, mineral or supplement and you could easily exceed the recommended amounts. Too much iron has been linked to impaired memory and excessive amounts of copper and zinc are bad for our brains too.

In order to keep your metals in check, you’ll need to take stock of some other sources too. If you already have a diet rich in iron through meats and vegetables, avoid using iron cookware. A significant amount of iron can leach from cast iron into our foods. If you’ve got copper plumbing, avoid drinking from the tap. Aluminum can be problematic too. Stick to wax paper instead of aluminum foil and avoid eating too much food out of a can.
