Most of us hold on to stuff we really don’t need or use...
Randy O. Frost, author of “Buried in Treasures,” says most of our clutter issues are psychological. Here are the top reasons we keep stuff – and some tricks to let go:
• It was a gift. If you feel guilty getting rid of something that was a gift, remind yourself that it was given to you to make you feel good, not to take up space, collect dust and stress you out. Go ahead and let go of that.
• It might be worth something someday. Unless it is pristine and still in the box, the extra space will probably be more valuable.
• It has sentimental value. A PHOTO of the sombrero from your Mexican cruise - or the potholder from kindergarten will keep the sentiment alive just as well as the item.
• It was an impulse buy. Just because you made a mistake, don’t feel you have to punish yourself by hanging onto it. Why relive the regret? Go ahead and get rid of it.
• You might need that someday. If the only time you think about that item is when you stumble across it – odds are you won’t ever suddenly need it. Let that go to someone else who might need it someday.
