If you can’t wait to get outside and exercise – be careful. Why you’ll need some spring training first...

It’s been a long, harsh winter.

A lot of fitness enthusiasts just can’t wait to get back out there and hit the open road. With daylight savings time upon us, that extra hour of daylight will tempting, especially for runners and bikers. But experts warn you really need to ease back into working out in the open air. Running Coach Tom Holland says the harsher the winter, the more we have to be careful not to come back too fast, too soon. When the weather changes many runners try to run too many miles too soon.

Holland says the body takes about two weeks to acclimate. Pavement is harsh on the body, as are cold spring temperatures. By easing back into outdoor exercise, you’ll give your body a chance to adjust.
